Music & Movie Mojo: Mariah Carey Returns 'Triumphant', Whitney Houston's Last Film: 'Sparkle'
Just days after the announcement that she will join the judges' panel of FOX's American Idol when the series returns in 2013, multi-platinum global superstar Mariah Carey announces the release of her first new single in more than two years, as "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" featuring [fellow Island Def Jam artist] Rick Ross and Meek Mill. "Triumphant (Get 'Em)" goes to radio Thursday, August 2nd, and goes up for sale at iTunes Tuesday, August 7th.
Mariah, who boasts an unparalleled music catalog with #1 hits in multiple formats on the Billboard charts, will follow the original version of "Triumphant" with a set of exclusive, re-sung dance remixes produced by some of the hottest names in the dance world. Mariah, who continues a long-time tradition of re-inventing her songs in the format, said: "I've always had so much fun re-singing my songs for the club/dance mixes. It gives me the freedom to sing as powerfully as I want and to rewrite the songs specifically for the genre." Mariah has 15 #1 hits on Billboard's Dance Music/Club Play chart, including "Dreamlover," "Fantasy" and "Obsessed."
Her upcoming new album follows up Mariah's worldwide multi-million-selling Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel (released September 2009), her multi-platinum E=MC² (2008), and worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (2005).
August 17th is the nation-wide release of the film remake of "Sparkle." The film was the pet project of Whitney Houston who had envisioned the title role being played by the late R&B princess, Aaliyah, before her untimely death.
It is a shame that Houston did not live to see the release of her film which occurs a week after what would have been her 49th birthday.
Nonetheless, American Idol winner and singer, Jordin Sparks, plays Sparkle with veteran actress Carmen Ejogo and Gossip Girl's Tika Sumpter as her siblings. Funnyman Mike Epps detours from his usual role as he portrays the controlling boyfriend of the character "Sister."
The Voice's Cee Lo Green plays "Black" and Hawthorne actor Derek Luke is "Stix".

Sparkle is the remake of the 1976 classic film starring Irene Cara (Fame), Philip Michael Thomas (Miami Vice) and Lonette McKee (Honey, Honey 2).
