For foodies and non-foodies alike, Latin American cuisine can be both exotic, yet sometimes hard to discover in a city like Chicago which, unknown to many, is home to consulates from 17 Latin American countries! That’s about to change at the inaugural Taste of Latin America food, wine and art festival supported by 26th Ward Alderman Roberto Maldonado.

This new culinary happening will be held in the west Logan Square neighborhood that’s fast-becoming a buzzing urban hot spot. Visitors will be treated to flavorful delights ranging from the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico to South America’s Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela and, of course, Mexico. In addition to food, wines and arts & crafts, the fest will feature a “Taste of Latin America Culinary Stage presented by Sysco Chicago” as well as an entertainment stage.

One of our fav celeb chefs, Stephanie Izard, has announced that the Little Goat will now open in October.

Little Goat, which Stephanie is opening in partnership with BOKA Restaurant Group, will feature diner-style cuisine and atmosphere, as well as an artisan bread and coffee shop where customers may purchase fresh-baked bread and fresh-brewed coffee. During the evening, the space will transform to a bar serving several local beers on tap.

The menu will include breakfast served all day and classic diner favorites made with ingredients that are either locally produced or made in-house. Sample dishes include Sloppy Joe on a Fried Steam Bun, Beef Cheek Stroganoff and Quail Egg Chop Suey as well as a Patty Melt.

“Growing up on the East Coast, I ate at diners all the time. I’ve always wanted to recreate that classic feel but bring my passion for working with local, fresh ingredients to the diner world,” said Stephanie Izard.

The diner will seat approximately 120 patrons and will be open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. The first floor will encompass the diner, bread shop, bar and coffee shop while the second floor will be home to a demo kitchen and classroom where Izard will team with other chefs to hold cooking classes for customers to get a hands-on education courtesy of the Top Chef Season 4 winner. The second floor space will also be available for private parties and events.

Toronto-based Anacleto Design is the design firm for the project tasked with creating a true 1950’s-style diner atmosphere. The counter tops and furniture will be diverse but stay loyal to the vibe of an old-style diner without any linoleum or laminate. The floors will also feature different tiles and types of wood in every area.

The Portage restaurant has slated a fall dinner with cocktail pairing for Wednesday August 29 that will showcase the unique talents of their new chef Airon Adams. The Northwest side’s dining destination is excited to welcome Adams back into the family, as he is no stranger to owner Quay Tao

The pair formerly conspired at Tao’s former eatery Tizi Melloul before Adams went on to work at Sweets and Savories and Longman and Eagle where he last resided before recently taking on the head chef position at The Portage.

Adams knocks American comfort food out of the park with his version of beef tenderloin, paired here with goat cheese whipped potatoes and huckleberry chocolate sauce and thumbs his nose at his native California’s political correctness with a foie gras risotto.

There is no doubt Adams will continue the excellence that made Chicago Magazine list The Portage as one of the best restaurants of 2011.

Details for August 29 Prelude To Fall Dinner: 5 courses for $45. 2 seatings, 6 and 8pm. Reservations required. Email theportage@gmail.com or call 773.853.0779 for reservations.
