| Heavy D |
The music industry lost another star last Tuesday with the passing of Hip-Hop icon, Heavy D. Heav (whose real name was Dwight Arrington Myers) succumbed to apparent cardiac arrest brought on by respiratory issues.
Like Luther Vandross, Big Pun, and the Notorious B.I.G., Heav had struggled with weight loss issues for many years.
I first met Heavy D at a music conference in Chicago back in the mid-90's. He was personable, fun-loving, and down-to-earth. I last saw him in Chicago in September 2009, when he was the special guest performer during the Hennessy Artistry Tour.
That was the real Heavy D. His friends had "Nuttin' But Love" for him. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons said, "He was liked by everybody. He never had an unkind word to say about anybody. He was a very inspired and sweet person."
Simmons went on to relate that Heavy D was instrumental in discovering and developing the careers of Mary J. Blige and Diddy (Sean Combs). As the A& R person for Uptown Records, he was responsible for what became known as the New Jack Swing sound in music.
One thing is for certain, Heavy D's music was always positive and upbeat. No one had to be called a b**** or a h* for him to get his message across. He also contributed to the success of other artists including Janet Jackson (Alright) and Michael Jackson (Jam), before trying his hand at acting.
He was most known for his roles in the popular television series "Roc" and "Living Single" and had most recently appeared in a highly-rated episode of Law & Order: SVU and the recently released movie, "Tower Heist."
A private funeral is planned for this Friday in Mount Vernon, New York with a public memorial in the works for a later date.
Heavy D's last message on Twitter a few days before his death simply said, "Be inspired."
We will never forget how much you inspired us all.
Yeezy and Hova, better known as Kanye West and Jay-Z, will be bringing their "royal" highness to Chicago for two concerts at the United Center on November 30th and December 1st.
Watch The Throne tickets and VIP experience packages are available here.
